Phantoms win 4th Florida Bowl Championship in 5 years

The Orlando Phantoms showed the strength of the their organization on Sunday, capturing their 4th Florida Bowl National Championship in 5 years.  That gives the Phantoms a 3-peat in the NFE Bowl game.  And what a night it was for the squad as the Phantoms took on the Catawba Hornet (NC) in National Bowl Weekend.

The Hornets truck first connecting on a 45yd strike to the end zone leaving most Phantoms fans wondering if the team was ready to shine as they ahve in previous years.  But the Phantoms answered quickly with rookie quarterback Torrence Brown hitting WR Chris Perry for 25yds and the touchdown.  The Phantoms missed the extra point, leaving the score tied 6-6.

The Hornets went deep again late in the 2nd quarter.  This time for 75yds and the score, but were unable to cash in on the extra point attempt.  Phantoms defense was getting beat deep and Head Coach Michael Torres was looking for answers on the sideline. “We’ve got to get our secondary straightend up,” said Coach T. “We got beat deep too many times in this game and we can’t let that happen anymore.”

Kicker Kyle Magee was able to put three on the board for the Phantoms with a 24yd FG and the Phantoms went into halftime down 12-9.  But obviously the Phantoms made the proper adjustments coming out of the locker room.

RB Greg Debose gets the touchdown

Brown marched the Phantoms down the field into the red zone and took the lead with a 7yd strick to WR Chris Perry early in the 3rd quarter.  Follow up with an acrobatic touchdown run by new RB Greg Debose and the Phantoms were feeling good, leading 21-12.

The Hornets would continue to attempt a comeback with a touchdown with five seconds left in the 3rd quarter and then another one minute left to go in the game.  But ultimately the Phantoms were too tough, overcoming te surge with a 45yd touchdown pass from backup QB Justin Muller to rookie WR Velton Brown.  The Phantoms finish the game with a couple of runs and a knee to runout the clock.

Final score 28-24 Phantoms Win!
