A slow first quarter has become a season long trend for the Phantoms. And they didn’t disappoint tonight. After a 45 minute game delay, and a 1st quarter that seemed to take an hour, this game ended up being the hard faught struggle we all expected.
It was Church Night Out at Lake Brantley last night, Orlando’s annual Fan Appreciation Night, and boy did the fans get their money’s worth. The game started with a scoreless fisrt quarter as both teams obviously needed to heat up from the long delay. Then suddenly, without warning, the Osceola Ravens hit on a long run to the end zone, taking the early lead 8-0 after a 2-point conversion.
But it wouldn’t take Orlando long to get in on the action, tying the score 8-8 in the 2nd quarter. The 3rd quarter would be much like last week’s game against River City. A lot of back and forth, with mistakes and missed opportunities. Orlando would score again late in the thrid taking a 14-8 lead into the 4th quarter.
It seemed as if the Phantoms had this close game all but wrapped up, but with 35 seconds left to go in regulation Osceola would threaten from the 9-yard line and score. The Phantoms would again finish the 4th quarter with a tie and go into overtime.
The Phantoms would get the ball first, but would be unable to capitalize. Osceola also wouldn’t be able to put the ball in the end zone over the 15-minute extra period and this game would end in a tie 14-14.
Looking forward, Orlando will have TWO WEEKS OFF, as next week is a league wide bye week and the following week the Phantoms have earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs. Orlando will return to action April 30th at Lake Brantley Stadium at 7pm. Their playoff opponent will be announced after the WildCard Round April 23rd.
